# CompressGIF

> Compress GIF files online with Gifsicle 1.96. The browser tool processes files locally; the REST API and MCP service run compression in the cloud for automated workflows.

The browser tool offers quality-first, size-first, and target-size compression. It preserves animation timing and looping, keeps dimensions unless resizing is selected, and returns a result no larger than the input. Target sizes are best-effort: a valid result can have `targetMet: false`. Compression does not use large language model inference.

Selecting a file in the browser does not upload it to CompressGIF. HTTPS image imports are fetched by the browser and require the source to allow CORS. REST and MCP requests upload or fetch files for cloud processing instead. Cloud file access expires after 24 hours; download links expire after 15 minutes. Background storage cleanup is not an exact 24-hour physical deletion guarantee.

REST and MCP use the same account API keys, credit balance, and limits. API keys belong in authorization headers, not URLs. Create a task with `POST /api/v1/compressions`, poll `GET /api/v1/compressions/{id}`, and read the balance with `GET /api/v1/usage`. Creation requires an account-scoped `Idempotency-Key`. Once the task succeeds, use `result.downloadUrl` from the status response to download the GIF.

The Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint is `https://compressgif.net/api/mcp`. Its tools are `compress_gif`, `get_compression`, and `get_usage`. MCP accepts a public HTTPS GIF URL; local files use REST multipart uploads. It does not accept server-local paths or large Base64 payloads. MCP has no separate fee. Successful results consume the disclosed credits even when the target is missed; failed processing releases reserved credits. Pro browser features do not increase API credits.
