Discord

Message attachment limits depend on your subscription and may vary during experiments.

  • Discord lists 20MB for free accounts, 50MB for Nitro Basic, and up to 500MB for Nitro attachments. Check the limit displayed in your account.
  • These are message attachment limits. Custom emoji and other server assets have separate requirements.
  • The Discord compressor starts with a 1MB target for a smaller sharing file; Discord's upload limit is separate.

How to use this tool

  1. Check the attachment allowance displayed in your Discord account.
  2. Add your GIF to the compressor with the 1MB target selected.
  3. Compress, preview the full loop, and check the output size.
  4. Download the GIF and attach it to a Discord message. Check any error against the file and channel requirements.

Start with the account's attachment allowance

Discord's attachment allowance varies by subscription, and experiments can change what individual accounts see. Compare the official account tiers with the allowance shown in your account before setting a target.

If your GIF already fits and looks clear, you can send it as it is. Compress it when you need to meet the upload limit or prefer a smaller file to share.

Message GIFs and custom emoji are different uploads

This page focuses on GIFs attached to messages. A custom server emoji, a sticker, or a profile asset uses a different upload flow and can have different requirements. Meeting a message attachment allowance does not establish that the file will work in those other places.

For a reaction shared in chat, preserve the expression or movement that makes it understandable. Preview the compressed loop before sending, particularly if the source includes captions or a busy background.

Pick a target that keeps the reaction readable

The 1MB preset is free and leaves more room for detail than the smaller targets. For a simple short reaction, 512KB may be enough. Compare both from the original file rather than repeatedly compressing an already compressed result.

The tool keeps frames, timing, and loop behavior while optimizing the file. Colors and fine details can change. If the chosen target is missed, use the explicit smaller-width retry only when a smaller picture is acceptable.

When a smaller GIF still will not upload

Read Discord's error message first. Compare the actual output size with your current allowance, confirm that you downloaded a GIF, and check whether you can attach files in that channel. Reducing bytes cannot fix a permission problem.

The source must also fit this tool's input allowance: free batches accept three GIFs of up to 10MB each. Discord's own upload allowance does not change that limit. GIF file contents do not need to be uploaded to CompressGIF for compression.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1MB Discord's GIF limit?

No. It is the starting compression target. Check the official attachment guidance and the limit displayed in your account.

Can this turn my GIF into a Discord emoji?

It can reduce an existing GIF's size, but it does not perform the server emoji setup or guarantee compliance with that separate upload flow.

Will the GIF still animate?

Compression preserves the GIF's frames, timing, and loop behavior. Check the preview and then the uploaded message; Discord's display settings can affect playback.

Why is a file accepted by Discord too large for this tool?

Each service has its own input allowance. CompressGIF's free per-file limit is 10MB; Pro accepts GIFs up to 50MB. Your Discord subscription does not change those limits.
