Gmail

For personal Gmail accounts, the attachment allowance applies to the total attached to a message.

  • Personal Gmail accounts allow up to 25MB of attachments in one email. Add the sizes of all attached files, not just the GIF.
  • When attachments exceed the limit, Gmail uses a Google Drive link. Work and school accounts can have limits set by their administrator.
  • An attached GIF and an image placed in the message body are different presentation choices. Test the message in the email clients your recipients use.

How to use this tool

  1. Check your Gmail account's attachment limit and add up the other files in the message.
  2. Add the GIF to this tool with the 1MB target selected.
  3. Compress, preview the output, and check its actual size.
  4. Download the GIF, add it to the message, and send a test if animation playback or inline appearance matters.

Budget for the whole message

Personal Gmail accounts allow up to 25MB of attachments in one email. Several files share that allowance. Compressing one GIF can help, but you still need to count the document, screenshots, and other attachments included in the same message.

Work and school accounts can have administrator-defined limits. The recipient's service can also have its own acceptance rules, so leave room below the sender's cap and check delivery when the message is important.

Choose between an attachment and an inline image

An attachment gives the recipient a file to open or save. An inline image appears as part of the message body. Choose the form that matches your purpose; reducing the file size does not decide how Gmail inserts it or how another email client displays it.

For a short instruction, include the essential instruction in text as well. Send a test message to check the animation in the email clients your recipients use, rather than assuming every client plays the loop the same way.

Keep the useful detail in a smaller GIF

The 1MB target is a suggested file budget, not Gmail's official limit. Watch the compressed loop for readable text and clear motion. If you are sending several simple illustrations, compare a 512KB result to see whether it still explains the same action.

Compression preserves frames, timing, and looping, but can change color detail. If the target is missed, the offered 80%-width retry is optional. Use another editor if you need to trim a clip or crop away irrelevant parts.

When Gmail adds a Drive link

Gmail uses a Google Drive link when attachments exceed its allowance. If a downloadable attachment is important to the recipient, reduce the combined file sizes or split the material appropriately before sending. A Drive link can be suitable too, provided the recipient has access.

The compressor accepts GIFs only. Free batches contain up to three files of 10MB each; these are separate from Gmail's rules. GIF file contents are processed in your browser without needing to upload them to CompressGIF.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gmail's allowance per GIF or per email?

For a personal account, the 25MB allowance applies to the total attached to one email. Count all attached files together.

Will a 1MB GIF always arrive as an animated image?

No. The file size does not guarantee animation playback or inline display in every recipient's email client. Send a test and include essential information in text.

Why did Gmail use a Drive link after I compressed the GIF?

The complete set of attachments may still exceed the account's allowance. Check the other files and, for a work or school account, the administrator's limit.

Can this compress the other attachments too?

No. CompressGIF handles GIF files only. PDFs, documents, videos, and other image formats need their own tools.
