How to use this tool
- Upload an existing GIF into the tool with 512KB already selected.
- Run compression and read the actual size of the output.
- Watch the complete loop and check the details that make the animation useful.
- Download the GIF, try a smaller target, or use the offered width retry if it is still too large.
When to choose a 512KB GIF target
A brief reaction or a single action in a product demo often needs more visual detail than an icon. A 512KB budget can be a useful place to start when the file should remain small but the subject must still be recognizable. The source's dimensions and motion determine how much can fit.
For instructions, isolate one task per animation. A long clip containing several unrelated actions is difficult to read and harder to compress, even before you choose a target.
Choose between 256KB, 512KB, and 1MB
Use the destination's actual limit first. If you have discretion, compare a smaller result against this one at the same display size. Keep the smaller file when the difference does not affect the message; keep more detail when it makes an action or expression easier to understand.
A 1MB target gives the compressor more room for a complex loop. It still cannot guarantee a readable long recording, and it should not be mistaken for a platform's upload allowance.
Review movement, not just the thumbnail
The first frame can look clean while moving sections show rough edges or color banding. Watch a full loop, paying attention to faces, fading backgrounds, and text. The compressor preserves the animation's frames, timing, and loop behavior, but color and lossy optimization can alter visual detail.
Keep the original file so you can compare new attempts against it. Repeatedly compressing the latest output can make it harder to judge which choice caused a visible change.
What to do when 512KB is out of reach
A missed target means the downloaded result may still be too large for your destination. If offered, choose the 80%-width retry and inspect the smaller version. To remove frames or shorten the clip, edit the source separately and return with a new GIF.
You can use this preset for free with up to three GIFs per batch and 10MB per source file. GIF file contents stay in your browser during compression and do not need to be uploaded to CompressGIF.
Frequently asked questions
Does 512KB mean half a megabyte here?
The preset means 512,000 bytes. The 1MB preset means 1,000,000 bytes, so 512KB is slightly more than half of that target.
Will my GIF keep looping?
The compressor preserves the GIF's loop behavior and frame timing. Preview the output and test it at the destination, where playback behavior can also depend on the app.
Is 512KB enough for a screen recording?
It depends on the recording. A short, small demonstration of one action is a better candidate than a large recording with scrolling and fine text. Check the result rather than relying on duration alone.
Can I enter a different target?
The four fixed size targets are free. Pro adds custom target sizes when your destination calls for a different allowance.
