GIF to animated WebP

Convert a GIF into WebP while keeping its animation and transparency. Preview the result before using it on a website or sending it elsewhere. Check that the destination accepts animated WebP, not just still WebP.

Files are processed locally in your browser and are never uploaded. Refreshing or leaving this page loses the current task and files.

The first task downloads about 32 MB of processing components. Your selected files stay on this device.

How to convert GIF to animated WebP

  1. Choose a GIF from your device. Free inputs can be up to 10 MB; paid plans accept up to 50 MB.
  2. Select Process. There is no quality slider in this version; WebP uses lossless encoding of the decoded GIF frames.
  3. Preview the animation, download the .webp file and compare its size with the source.

Check the output requirements

SettingWhat to choose
Output formatAnimated WebP when the source has changing frames; identical frames may combine into a still WebP.
TransparencyTransparent source areas can remain transparent. No white background is added.
PlaybackSource timing and loop behavior are retained where representable. The maximum GIF finite loop count cannot be represented and is rejected.
Input limitsGIF input: Free 10 MB / paid 50 MB, up to 1,000 frames within the total frame-pixel budget.

A single result must be 50 MB or smaller. GIF results sent to the compressor must also fit its input limit: 10 MB on Free or 50 MB on a paid plan.

Use WebP when the destination accepts animated images

WebP can carry animation and transparency together. That makes it an option for a web animation that needs a clear background. A platform accepting .webp pictures may still reject or flatten animated WebP, so test an actual output before replacing the GIF.

Use MP4 when the destination expects a video file, and keep GIF when it specifically requires .gif. Changing a filename extension does not change the file format.

Compare size rather than assuming a reduction

Lossless WebP encoding preserves the decoded GIF image data; it cannot restore colors or detail already missing from the source GIF. Encoding choices and the animation itself determine the output size, so the WebP can be larger.

If you must deliver a GIF under a byte limit, use the GIF compressor instead. The WebP result cannot be passed into the GIF-only Continue compressing flow.

Questions about this tool

Will this convert every frame, or only the first one?

Changing animation frames are converted to animated WebP with the source timing. Identical adjacent frames may be combined. If every frame displays the same image, the encoder can produce a still WebP with the same visible picture.

Does the WebP keep a transparent background?

Yes, source transparency is supported. This tool does not add a background color. It also cannot reconstruct transparency that was already removed from the GIF.

Is GIF to WebP guaranteed to make the file smaller?

No. Compare the output size shown after processing with your original file. This version does not offer a target byte size or a lossy WebP quality control.

Why does an app show the WebP as a still image?

The app may support still WebP but not animated WebP, or may flatten it during upload. Open the downloaded file in a compatible browser and check the destination’s animation support. Keep the GIF if that destination requires GIF animation.
