Reverse GIF

Play an animated GIF backwards, from the last frame to the first. Each frame keeps its own display time, and the source loop setting is retained. The image is not mirrored.

Files are processed locally in your browser and are never uploaded. Refreshing or leaving this page loses the current task and files.

The first task downloads about 32 MB of processing components. Your selected files stay on this device.

How to reverse an animated GIF

  1. Choose a GIF from your device. No speed or time-range setting is needed for a full reversal.
  2. Select Process to reverse the entire frame sequence.
  3. Watch the result through one cycle, then download the reversed GIF.

What reversal changes

SettingWhat to choose
Frame orderA → B → C becomes C → B → A. All source frames are included.
Frame delaysEach frame keeps its own delay when its position changes.
Loops and dimensionsThe source loop setting, width and height are retained.
GIF inputUp to 10 MB on Free or 50 MB on paid plans. Maximum side: 4,096 px; at most 1,000 frames and 50 million frame pixels (width × height × frames).

A single result must be 50 MB or smaller. GIF results sent to the compressor must also fit its input limit: 10 MB on Free or 50 MB on a paid plan.

Example: reverse a three-frame action

If frames A, B and C last 100, 300 and 200 ms, the reversed order is C for 200 ms, B for 300 ms, then A for 100 ms. One cycle still lasts 600 ms. Reversing a one-frame image has no visible effect.

Reverse playback is different from a mirror or a boomerang

Reverse changes time order. A horizontal flip changes left and right inside every frame. A boomerang needs a forward sequence followed by a reversed sequence; this tool creates only the reversed sequence.

To reverse a short section, trim it first, download that result and select it here. There is no multi-clip timeline or automatic forward-and-back merge.

Questions about this tool

Does reversing a GIF change its speed?

It keeps the original delays attached to their corresponding frames. A pause at the end can move to the start, so the rhythm may feel different even though the total duration is retained.

Will transparent or optimized GIFs reverse correctly?

The tool works with composited frames before reversing them, so stored partial frames are not simply shuffled as raw patches. Source transparency is included in processing. Preview a whole cycle to check moving edges and transitions.

Can I make a GIF play forward and then backwards?

This version produces backwards playback only. It does not join the original and reversed animations into a boomerang or ping-pong loop.

Why is the reversed GIF larger?

Reversing changes the frame sequence and encodes it again. That can change how efficiently frames compress. The edit is kept even if it grows; use Continue compressing if you need a smaller GIF.
